Brixham and The Great War Project

£2‘Brixham and The Great War Project’ present: ‘The Provident’ telling the story of the heroic rescue:
January 1st 1915, skipper William Pillar and crew of the fishing smack ‘Provident’ save 72 shipwrecked sailors from HMS Formidable, the first British battleship to be torpedoed by enemy submarine in the First World War. After a 4 hour battle in storm force 10, Pillar and crew successfully rescue and bring back to Brixham all 72 survivors unharmed. For this heroic deed King George Vth awards them Life Saving Medals at Buckingham Palace. The story makes national and international news.
